Choosing bowl gouges

Read the tool dimensions

Compare the maker's definition of the nominal size first. If a replacement handle or sharpening fixture is involved, look for the physical bar size separately from the stated cutting width.

Compare the supplied grind

A conventional nose and a swept-back fingernail profile offer different edge shapes. Choose a profile for the task and the sharpening setup you can maintain.

Department questions

Does a 1/2-inch label always mean the same measurement?

It can refer to a maker's nominal size rather than the shaft dimension. Look for both in the maker's table.

What if I already own a modular handle?

Check that the tool is unhandled and listed for the handle's exact collet or tang type.

Can a spindle roughing gouge fill the same role?

Keep spindle roughing gouges for the maker's specified spindle work. For bowl work, compare tools expressly described for bowls.
