Choosing skew chisels

Compare how the body sits

A flat bar, eased edges and a true oval body meet the rest differently. Look at the cross section and the type of rest you use before treating two same-width skews as interchangeable.

Match the edge to the task

A broad edge covers more surface, while a narrower blade fits smaller spindle details. Read the maker's listed edge geometry before comparing tools that share the skew name.

What does oval describe?

It usually refers to the tool body or cross section. Check the edge shape separately.

Does skew width tell me the bevel angle?

The width and bevel angle are different measurements. Look for an explicitly listed angle if it matters.

What if I mainly turn small pens?
