Separate roughing and detail

A broad spindle roughing profile suits the initial spindle work specified by its maker. A smaller spindle or detail gouge serves tighter forms. Check the manufacturer’s workpiece limits for the exact tool.

Check space around the rest

For a benchtop lathe, consider the length behind the rest as well as the cutting profile. A short handle may fit a crowded bench, while a larger handle gives a different grip position.
