Choose a hollowing tool by its reach

A tool that reaches the center of an open bowl may not pass through a narrow opening to reach the shoulder. Compare the path of the cutting head as well as the shaft length.

Map the path from the opening

Start with the opening and the part of the inside surface you need to reach. Compare straight, curved and swan-neck profiles against that path. Check any clearance or support requirements documented for the exact model.

Check the head and the support

A complete handheld hollower, a bare tool bar and a support rig are different purchases. Confirm what holds the cutter and which parts are included. Use the maker's limits on the tool rest or support system.

Find the replaceable parts before buying

If the cutter is replaceable, note its part number and fastener. A tool family may use different cutter sizes on curved and straight models, so use the code for the specific tool rather than the family name.

Guide questions

Can I compare working depth by total length?

Total length includes the grip and cannot establish a safe reach. Use the maker's specifications.

When does a curved shaft help?

It gives another path to an inside wall or shoulder when the opening restricts a straight approach.

Does a carbide hollower use the same cutter as a finisher?

Some documented combinations share a cutter, but verify the exact code and holder first.

Which accessory suits the job?

  1. Compare the same mid-size swan-neck profile with or without the grip. If you already own the matching three-eighths-inch handle, the separate bar can fill the same slot.

  2. The 6601 has a straight path toward the center. The curved 6603 is intended to approach under a lip. Both models in this size use Ci5.
